How to keep hope alive even when your dreams are crushed.
Mou is 27 years old and survives by collecting scrap metal in the streets of Barcelona. The last ten years he has dreamed of a new life and the chance of being an upstanding citizen in his new home country of Spain. Long processes, bureaucracy and uncertainty create an asphyxiating atmosphere and Mou would like to get away from it as soon as possible. Life is controlled by the crushing feeling of moving against the tide in the midst of fear and pursuit of dreams.
Juho-Pekka Tanskanen’s Waiting for Barcelona is a movie about hopelessness. The closed borders of Spain, and Europe in general, prevent the dreams and possibilities of countless people. Hope is born out of a belief for a better tomorrow and out of the dreams that should be reachable by all. This hope has been locked behind countless forms and faceless public servants. The protagonist of Tanskanen’s beautiful and impressive film is Mou who gives a voice and a face to the thousands of refugees living in Spain. These refugees have no papers, no identity, but they all dream and hope of a life that we so often take for granted.
