Like father, like son?

The brutal gang rape in a bus in 2012, and the gang rape and murder of an eight-year-old are only a few of the horrible news from India this decade. Women’s rights and obvious misogyny are current topics in Indian society and for a good reason. Some small changes have been made after the horrible crimes: for example, public transport now have safe zones for women. However, the real challenge is to change the values of a deeply patriarchal society.

Inka Achtén’s new documentary tells the story of Men Against Violence and Abuse (MAVA), an organisation working on a grass-roots level in Mumbai. The aim of the organisation is to challenge boys to question the traditional male roles and to shatter the outdated and perverted ideas and thoughts about women and womanhood. The protagonist of the movie is Ved, a sixteen-year-old son of an abusive father and a patronised mother. The movie follows Ved's life for three years asking whether new ideas can be implanted or if the old traditions are rooted too deep to change.

The highly topical documentary challenges us to think about our own world views, the roles we grow into along with the roles and models we leave as our legacy.
